Publication Export

Export presets

ChemStitch includes a dedicated publication export dialog for generating images suitable for journal submissions, presentations, and patents.

Three presets are available:

  • ACS Document 1996 — Follows the American Chemical Society’s standard for chemical structure graphics: 14.4 pt bond width, Arial 10 pt font, 0.6 pt line width. This is the preset to use for ACS journal submissions (JACS, Journal of Organic Chemistry, etc.). The ACS Document 1996 standard is a widely-adopted bond width and font size specification used across most chemistry publishers.
  • Screen — Default rendering optimized for on-screen display.
  • Custom — Adjustable bond width (0.4–2.0 pt), font size (8–14 pt), and label size (8–14 pt). ACS reference values are shown for comparison, with a "Reset to ACS 1996" button to restore the standard.

DPI options

PNG export supports three resolution settings:

  • 300 DPI (default) — Standard print resolution, suitable for most journal submissions.
  • 450 DPI — Higher resolution for detailed structures or large figures.
  • 600 DPI — Maximum resolution for patent filings or when the publisher requires it.

SVG vs PNG

SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) produces resolution-independent output. Use SVG when the publisher accepts vector formats, or when you need to edit the figure in Illustrator or Inkscape.

PNG produces a raster image at your chosen DPI. Use PNG when the submission system requires a bitmap format.

Both formats use a white background with black bonds regardless of your dark mode setting, ensuring clean output for publication.

Dark mode handling

All publication and custom exports automatically switch to a white background with black bonds, even if you are working in dark mode. This ensures that exported images meet publisher requirements without manual adjustment.
